UA Writing Project Programming
In 2022, the UA Writing Project is excited to offer and host three upcoming events. Bookmark and check this page for additional upcoming programming.
Equity-Based Writing Instructional Practices Course (Summer 2022)
Writing is taught inconsistently in schools and teachers often report feeling unprepared to teach writing effectively. Compound those concerns with lack of knowledge on equity-based writing instructional methods, and teachers are likely to teach writing both ineffectively and in ways that continue to privilege specific groups of students. This course focuses on integrating three components of writing instruction: (1) Integrating equity-based language into learning objectives; (2) Applying linguistic justice to teaching and assessment practices; and (3) Implementing writing-as-problem solving pedagogy.
PAGES: Arts-Integrated Writing Instruction Professional Development (Fall 2022)
The PAGES “A Professional Development Program for Elementary Teachers” is intended to develop and explore the impacts of an arts-forward, arts-integrated creative writing professional development program for elementary teachers called PAGES. PAGES is a professional development program for arts and game-based effective writing strategies. This online program provides a learning opportunity for teachers to thoughtfully and intentionally integrate music, dance, and theatre performing arts with effective creative writing instruction. The program is developed through a game-based lens to offer motivation and engagement to teachers. PAGES (1) studies how teachers understand writing and arts integration; (2) develops teacher knowledge of writing constructs and arts integration; (3) provides targeted, evidence-based instructional strategies for writing instruction and the arts; (4) enhances writing applications through the arts of music, dance, and theatre; and (5) examines how teacher beliefs about writing and performing arts change as a result of the PAGES.
Hale County Community Literacy Event (Fall 2022)
The UA Writing Project is collaborating with Hale County Schools to create and host a community literacy event for PK-12 students and their families. This event will include opportunities for students to learn about writing practices they can engage with their children at home and participants will receive literacy materials. The event is intended to bring joy and excitement to writing.
